Discovery Day: Canoe and Conservation

Join us at the Discovery Center for Canoeing and Conservation! This is a joint program offered by Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) and Audubon Mid-Atlantic (AMA).

POBS will offer instruction in basic paddling skills and canoe safety.  Audubon educators will teach participants how to use binoculars to try and catch glimpses of the local flora and fauna that can be found within the Strawberry Mansion Reservoir’s unique urban aquatic ecosystem.

As participants make their way around the reservoir in canoes, AMA guides will help spot wildlife and offer some interpretation of the history of the reservoir. POBS will offer coaching to help participants paddle and steer canoes efficiently and safely.

Registration is first come, first served.

Discovery Day: City Nature Challenge and Ziplining

Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic as we document the many organisms that call Discovery Center their home. The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and log plants and wildlife in cities. It's an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities collaborate to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. Check in throughout the day to see live results on our TV.

We'll start the day with Nature Journaling from 10-11am. Learn how to tie together creativity with scientific effort as we look for early-spring plants, birds and other organisms. Journals and pencils will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. We'll also start with an iNaturalist app tutorial, so you're ready to trek through the trails. Let's celebrate biodiversity, and continue celebrating Earth Day! Registration for City Nature Challenge is not needed, but registration for Nature Journaling from 10-11am is required.

Come Zipline with Philadelphia Outward Bound School! Registration is first come-first serve from 10am - 3pm. Climb up the 30-foot cargo net to the zip platform and then fly 300 feet across the “zip highway,” descending via a ladder. No prior experience necessary. POBS will provide equipment and instruction. Suitable for ages 8 and up. Children and youth must by accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. Closed-toed shoes such as sneakers are required.
