Discovery Day: Ziplining and Conservation Tours!

Discovery Days are monthly events at the Discovery Center that are free and open to the public. These events are co-hosted by Philadelphia Outward Bound School (POBS) and Audubon Mid-Atlantic (AMA). Each month provides opportunities for community members to experience different adventures and activities related to the outdoors.

Come Zipline with Philadelphia Outward Bound School! Registration is first come-first serve from 10am - 4pm. Climb up the 30-foot cargo net to the zip platform and then fly 300 feet across the “zip highway,” descending via a ladder. No prior experience necessary. POBS will provide equipment and instruction. Suitable for ages 8 and up. Children and youth must by accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. Closed-toed shoes such as sneakers are required.

Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic as we tour around our site to speak about conservation and volunteer efforts taking place, and how it ties back to the history of our center. Binoculars will be available to take a closer look at animals and plants. We'll also start with a tutorial of the iNaturalist and eBird app to document organisms and participate in community science. Each walk will be 45 minutes long, scheduled from 10-3pm: starting at 10am, 11am, 1pm, and 2pm.

Artist-Guided Nature Journaling

Rooted in close observation of the local environment, the workshop invites participants—guided by naturalist insight and artistic prompts—to slow down, notice, and record what they see, hear and feel through drawing, writing, or both, exploring the productive juxtaposition of scientific observation and personal reflection to deepen their relationship to place.

No experience or artistic ability is necessary. Pencils and notebooks will be provided or bring your own.

This event coincides with Love and Murphy’s exhibitions on view at The John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove from April 18 - August 16, 2026. The artists partnered on artworks in Field Notes: Learning to See, on view in the historic house at Mill Grove. Deirdre Murphy’s paintings are featured in the solo exhibition Deirdre Murphy: Home Making, on view in the visitor center and historic house.

Discover Trees at the Discovery Center

Join Penn State Master Watershed Stewards and Audubon Mid-Atlantic as we highlight trees present at the center, learn how we could care for them, and how they support local animals, insects and humans.

This program is for all ages (young children should have an adult present). We'll learn what a watershed is, tree identification basics, walk the trail to test our knowledge, and chat about how we can care for our trees.

Daylight After Dark: Artists and Writers Showcase on Climate Change

To daylight a creek or stream is to open it back up--to unbury what was once buried, and make it visible again.

You are invited to join Philadelphia artists and writers for a night of readings, exhibits, and performances that make our city's climate realities visible and envision better climate futures. Sponsored by the Discovery Center, Audubon Mid-Atlantic, Blue Stoop, and Buried Creek Collective, a new initiative to educate writers about our changing environment and foster creative climate resilience.

Please join us for food and hot beverages as we toast to the conclusion of Buried Creek Collective's inaugural Climate Change for Writers Program.

RSVP link coming soon! To learn more, reach out to buriedcreekcollective@gmail.com
