Philly tracking club is part of  Northeast Wildlife Trackers (NWT) and is dedicated to learning how to read the landscape — tracks, sign, behavior, and seasonal patterns — while moving slowly and respectfully through the land. The Strawberry Mansion Lake has been here for decades, let’s see what’s inside! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in observing and documenting this aquatic ecosystem as the seasons change.

For April 4th, we're focusing on our insect larvae and caring for their habitats. We're using Leaf Packets to collect our aquatic macroinvertebrates, sampling in different spots in the reservoir. Their presence can help us plan future habitat restoration. You'll learn how to identify what we find, and assist with planting native plants. Joining us is AMA Delaware River Watershed team, and they'll host a separate activity on the trail: showing us how to plant native bushes that can provide more habitat for our insects.

Throughout the year, you can try our rotating activities of exploring microorganisms and macroinvertebrate sampling during warmer weather. This community science data will be collected and utilized for future management. Kid-friendly activities are available like using children binoculars, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts (adult supervision is needed). Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic and Temple University at the Discovery Center as we work to maintain our habitats and conservation work for Earth Day! This site is home to over 170+ species of birds, many species of insects and mammals, and up to thousands of visitors per year. Our efforts can aid in the livelihood of these animals and stewardship for the people. We'll focus on removing invasive bushes and plants around the trailhead so we can plant native shrubs in the future, as well as fill our seed packets for the public seed library.

Afterwards, we open our space to an open stage for those to come and share their voice and appreciation of our earth and community. This can be through poetry, stories and other types of offerings. This session will start with a brief, Strawberry Mansion history lesson from our neighborhood and tour leader Judith.

See our seeds come full circle! Join Audubon Mid-Atlantic in improving habitats for birds and wildlife here at the Discovery Center by removing invasive plants and replacing them with the native ones - some of which we started earlier this year. 

This is the 4th event in our Seed Stewards series. You can attend just one, or come back for future events to guide native seeds all the way through their life cycles.

Join artists Yvonne Love and Deirdre Murphy for nature journaling at the Discovery Center. The artists will begin by sharing images from their collaborative artworks that blend birdwatching data with hand painting, cut paper, and collage. 

Rooted in close observation of the local environment, the workshop invites participants—guided by naturalist insight and artistic prompts—to slow down, notice, and record what they see, hear and feel through drawing, writing, or both, exploring the productive juxtaposition of scientific observation and personal reflection to deepen their relationship to place. 

No experience or artistic ability is necessary. Pencils and notebooks will be provided or bring your own. 

This event coincides with Love and Murphy’s exhibitions on view at The John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove from April 18 - August 16, 2026. The artists partnered on artworks in Field Notes: Learning to See, on view in the historic house at Mill Grove. Deirdre Murphy’s paintings are featured in the solo exhibition Deirdre Murphy: Home Making, on view in the visitor center and historic house.
